Active Multiple Myeloma
Active multiple myeloma refers to a stage of the disease where symptoms and complications are present due to the proliferation of malignant plasma cells. Unlike smoldering or asymptomatic myeloma, where patients may not exhibit symptoms, active multiple myeloma is characterized by organ damage, often summarized by the acronym CRAB: Calcium elevation (hypercalcemia), Renal (kidney) impairment, Anemia, and Bone lesions.
Patients with active multiple myeloma may experience bone pain, fatigue, frequent infections, and elevated M protein levels in the blood or urine. Treatment typically begins immediately upon diagnosis of active disease and can include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted treatments aimed at reducing the plasma cell burden, alleviating symptoms, and controlling disease progression.
