Hypercalcemia
Hypercalcemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood, and it is a common complication in multiple myeloma patients. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells can stimulate the breakdown of bone tissue, releasing excess calcium into the bloodstream. This bone destruction not only weakens bones but also leads to elevated calcium levels.
Symptoms of hypercalcemia include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, confusion, and in severe cases, kidney failure or heart problems. Managing hypercalcemia is critical for multiple myeloma patients, as it can worsen their condition. Treatments often involve medications to lower calcium levels and therapies aimed at controlling the underlying multiple myeloma.
