Light Chains

Light chains are small protein components that form part of antibodies, which are produced by plasma cells in the immune system. In multiple myeloma, these light chains can be produced in excess, leading to an imbalance that can cause damage to the kidneys and other organs. There are two types of light chains: kappa and lambda, and an overproduction of either can be a sign of multiple myeloma or other related disorders.

For multiple myeloma patients, measuring light chain levels in the blood or urine is an essential part of monitoring the disease. Abnormal levels, also called *free light chains*, can indicate the progression of the disease and help guide treatment decisions. Regular testing of light chain levels is often used to assess the effectiveness of treatments and detect any early signs of relapse.
